Alice's great-grandson Peter Barratt

Peter Barratt is a management accountant by profession and currently Financial Controller for a market leading IT company. Due to voluntary duties in the community, Peter is also CRB cleared.

As a young boy Peter first heard about his great-grandmother Alice Hawkins from his grandfather who would recount stories of joining his mother on suffragette marches and rallies. Also Peter’s mother would tell stories of ‘granny Alice’ and show him the suffragette memorabilia that once belonged to Alice and is still in the family to this day.

Asked by chance some eight years ago to speak to a local Townswomen Guild, Peter decided to research this fascinating part of his family history in more depth and become a public speaker.

To date, Peter has spoken to over 250 groups including schools, women’s groups, family history societies, luncheon clubs and as an after dinner speaker and has won much praise for conveying the story of Alice’s fight for women’s rights with such enthusiasm and passion.

Peter has written several articles for magazines and newspapers, contributed to and written the foreword for a book about Alice, created a web site and has taken part in radio and TV programmes on numerous occasions.

Peter says his over-riding passion is to keep the memories alive of what the women of this country had to fight for all those years ago to gain a basic human right, the right to vote….
